Office of the President

Grand Rapids Community College remains steadfast in its mission to provide accessible, high-quality education that empowers students to achieve their goals and contribute to their communities. As interim president, Dr. Steven J. Triezenberg is honored to serve GRCC during this important period of transition — a time marked by both reflection and forward progress.

Dr. Triezenberg brings decades of leadership experience in higher education, with a career rooted in academic excellence, student development and institutional integrity. He previously served as a faculty member at Michigan State University, where he was recognized for innovative teaching and mentorship. As founding dean of the Van Andel Institute Graduate School, he led the creation of a nationally respected doctoral program centered on problem-based learning, broad access and personalized support.

In his role at GRCC, Dr. Triezenberg is focused on four key priorities:

  1. Providing stability and support across the college community
  2. Advancing GRCC’s core mission of educational access and excellence
  3. Celebrating the college’s impact locally and regionally
  4. Ensuring a smooth and successful transition to the next permanent president

With a thoughtful and collaborative approach to leadership, Dr. Triezenberg values the insight and expertise of GRCC’s faculty and staff — and recognizes them as central to the college’s success. He believes meaningful progress is grounded in strong relationships and shared purpose.

Dr. Triezenberg holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and education from Calvin College, and spent nearly two decades in faculty leadership at Michigan State University. He has served on the Calvin University Board of Trustees, including as chair of its Academic Affairs Committee, and remains active as a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission.

Throughout his interim presidency, Dr. Triezenberg welcomes opportunities to connect with students, faculty, staff and community partners. Whether visiting a classroom, attending a campus event or engaging with the broader community, he encourages individuals to share their stories, insights and aspirations for the future of GRCC.

Together, we will continue building on the college’s strong foundation — fostering an environment where every student can thrive and every voice can contribute to our shared mission.
